Technique: Recensement des pneus en mousse pour

Introduction.

Ce recensement des pneus en mousse pour la catégorie piste 1/12° électrique n'a pas volonté d'être exhaustif, mais sera peut-être réactualisée dans le futur. Il est en effet né de l'irritation de ne pas pouvoir trouver d'informations convenables sur la plupart des sites des fabricants et a pour but d'essayer de centraliser quelques informations de sources plus ou moins fiables sur les différentes références et leurs utilisations. En effet, les désignations des pneus en mousse chez les fabricants ne sont pas normées. Elles sont souvent faites sous la forme de couleur. Toutefois, une mousse désignée par la couleur "A" chez un fabricant "X" ne sera pas forcément identique ou même équivalente à une mousse désignée par la couleur "A" chez un autre fabricant "Y". Pire, chez un même fabricant, une même couleur peut désigner une mousse différente selon qu'il s'agisse d'un pneu avant ou arrière. Et la plupart des fabricants, hormis de quelques rares exceptions, s'emploient souvent activement à ne livrer aucune information technique fiable à leurs clients, se contentant malheureusement que de verbiage marketing sans intérêt.

Il est très important de savoir qu'une mousse ne se définie pas uniquement par sa dureté (mesurée en Shore). Beaucoup plus importante pour ses caractéristiques et surtout son comportement sur la piste est sa composition, notamment le rapport entre sa teneur en gomme naturelle et en gomme synthétique, mais également la densité de pores et leur géométrie. Sa qualité dépend également du sérieux du processus de fabrication, car les pneus sont découpés dans des plaques, dont les bords ont une densité plus grande que le coeur, et de son stockage et de son conditionnement, car les mousses sont sensibles à la température, à la lumière et au vieillissement!

Un aspect également à considérer lors d'un achat est le déport des jantes (voir par exemple l'article sur la Awesomatix A12 sur ce même site). Elles peuvent avoir entre 0 et 3mm (à ma connaissance, il s'agit de la valeur maximum observée) de déport interne. Il est certes possible de jouer sur le calage latéral des moyeux de l'axe arrière, mais il n'est pas toujours possible de rétrécir la voie en dessous de la valeur maximum autorisée par les règlements en compétition pour certaines autos. Même en loisir, cela peut poser problème, car les roues pourraient dépasser de la carrosserie. Il faut être prudent, car chez un même fabricant, les jantes n'ont pas toutes le même déport! Il n'y a pas de standard, et les fabricants en font un peu à leur tête.

Conseil: N'hésitez pas à échanger votre expérience sur les pneus avec de nombreux autres pilotes!

If you want a purple similar to say Jaco use Our Double purple. Medium/firm compound recommended for carpet and asphalt racing. Low wear/ longer lasting characteristics.

Purple/Orange, Dual compound tire for carpet tracks. Helps prevent traction roll. This tire is equivalent to our sedan Double Pink/orange.

Double Purple – Duro 45-50, Firm compound recommended on high traction asphalt and carpet tracks. Equivalent to Jaco purple. Low wear/longer lasting characteristics.

Double Purple/Orange, Dual compound tire for high traction carpet tracks. Helps prevent traction roll.

Red, Firm compound recommended on asphalt for front tire".

Sur le site Schumacher R/C Racing, on trouve un listing des nombreuses références de la gamme Contact, mais également des renseignements techniques quand à leur nature et leur utilisation. Le tableau ci-dessous ne recense qu'une sélection LMP de ces références. Les pneus pour GT12, plus étroits, n'y sont pas recensés.

T Foam

T foam is the most complete in the range. It benefits from performance and lap times equal or better than Q foam, with the added benefit of being easier to drive, less twitchy and easy to attack the track with. This often leads to improved lap times. It also has much better durability, lower wear rates (close to A foam) and when using the non-oil type additives, keeps grip to the end of the race much better than our other options. This tyre is great on all carpet types.

B Foam

This tire is secured from our partners Team Bomber in Japan. It is the foam that was used to win the 2016 IFMAR 1/12 world championships and often offers the best performance. It is a super quick tire in all circumstances; it’s only down side being the increased wear rates over T foam. (More similar to Q foam wear)
It is often a great option for use on just the rear of the car, when you want super planted high grip rear traction. In this case try any of the low shore rated fronts such 30, 32 and 35 in either A, Q, J or T foam.

J Foam

J Foam in a very fast tire when the track grip is high. It lends itself well to Primafelt carpet or when oil based additives are used. In these cases it may even be faster than T foam, although this lap time comes from a more aggressive handling car.

A Foam

A Foam is our most durable, affordable tire. Perfect if you want to go many runs without taking the wheels off the car during weekly club racing. The wear rate of this foam is the lowest in the range, even lower than seen with T foam. It rarely offers the overall performance of the others, however in lower traction conditions; occasionally it is a match for the more expensive options. Suggested for use on Primafelt or CRC Black carpet, or when oily additive is in use for.

Q Foam

Q foam offers more performance than A foam in most conditions. It does however have higher wear rates so needs to be replaced slightly more often than A. It works great on ETS type carpet. Compared with T foam it is capable of matching T foams performance on lap time, although it has a tendency to lose some of its performance throughout the race when using all non-oil type additives such as SXT3.0 or Nosram Carpet."

Sur le site du fabricant HotRace Tyres, hormis une page pour dire qu'il fabrique des pneus pour la piste 1/12° électrique en version Asphalt et Carpet, des Shores 25 à 45, que les jantes ont un offset de 2mm et qu'il existe des "Hardberg Edition", absolument rien! Citation: "Developed after long and accurate tests by our racing and developing team, the wheels feature a 2mm offset and the tyres are availabe in asphalt and carpet versions, with shores from 25 to 45!
Available also the Hagberg edition tire, made with all the input by the RC legend Alexander Hagberg".

En fouillant dans la boutique en ligne du fabricant, il semblerait que les shores s'étendent en réalité de 30 à 40 seulement.

Même si ce fabricant historique a disparu des radars pendant un certain temps, les pneus de cette époque sont parfois encore disponibles à la vente. BSR a repris le nom de Jaco pour commercialiser une gamme parallèle à celle de BSR, avec des jantes noires ou blanches similaires ou identiques aux anciennes Jaco Prism.

JFT (Japan foam Tire).

Le site officiel de ce fabricant japonais est fermé à l'heure de l'écriture de l'article (début 2020). Il existe un Facebook (officiel?) au nom de JFT-JapanFoamTire, mais avec assez peu d'information, et très rarement de réponses aux questions posées.

D'après mes mesures, les pneus sont tournés d'origine pour l'avant à au moins 46mm de diamètre pour 26mm de large, et à l'arrière à au moins 46mm de diamètre pour 38mm de large. Ils sont montés sur des jantes à bâtons grises.

Sur le FaceBook du distributeur anglais Zen Racing, on trouve ces explications sur les pneus JFT:

"JFT Tyres: A short explanation of JFT and the range of tyres available for use in LMP.

JFT stands for Japan Foam Tyre. In the UK we currently offer three different families of foam - A, C & S. Please note that JFT uses the same foam for fronts and rears, so a C35 front is the same as a C35 rear (for example.) This is different from other brands where a Blue front might be different from a Blue rear.

Most people reference JFT tyres using a combination of the variety/family (A, C or S) in conjunction with the shore (30, 32, 35, etc.) This is easier than using colours, as there are common colours across the different families (both C and S have a blue, for example.)

A Foam = Pink/Magenta/Purple Family. These tyres have a high natural rubber content and therefore have the greatest oil content of the three types available. To avoid weight we have chosen Nylon as material, which is light and strong by the same time. The wheel design makes it almost unbreakable in combination with low rotating mass. Coming to the rubber compounds, we found pink and magenta the best choice at front for any carpet or circumstances.Choosing a rear compound is slightly different. Rear pink is a great allround choice everywhere for sure, especially for clubracing/racers. But, there is also some new compounds in our rear tyre range that allow more fine tuning. White and silver are compounds that work perfectly on high traction. For low traction, fuzzy carpet or oily track conditions brown rears is the way to go." Les jantes arrière ont ainsi une largeur de 38mm pour un déport interne de 3mm, et les jantes avant ont une largeur de 25.5mm pour un déport interne de 12mm. On y trouve également ces informations:
